Sen John Kerrys father was Richard Kerry who studied law and was a pilot during ww II having graduated in 1940. he contracted tuberculosis and was retired then became an attourney for the state of massachusetts before moving to DC where he entered the foreign service and served as an ambassador during the eisenhower admin and probably others.

Depleted uranium was first used for weapons metal during the vietnam war years because of the fact that it is one of the densest metals known to man. DU is also much less radioactive than natural Uranium because it is what remains when you extract most of the uranium used for reactors or nuclear devices ( bombs ) , As such it was natural to try using it for projectiles because density and weight are the prime ballistic qualities for armor penetration bullets or shell sabots for penetration of the same.
It is also used for armor metal on some of the most recent tanks as a center layer inside of treated steel like a sandwich which strengthens the resistance of the armor to penetrating rounds.
When used for armor penetrating bullets the projectile as it drills through metal tends t heat up and this causes it to fragment into a powder which if inhaled is toxic. once it enters the protected vehicle it usually bursts into flame and sets off the ammunition inside of the tank or whatever.
left over depleted uranium from power production in nuclear plants is stored in a chemical form of salts inside of sealed containers mainly to prevent it from absorbing moisture because when it combnes with water it truns into a gaseous substance that can spread toxins.
SOme depleted urnaium can be used for low power nuclear plants and some cannot. the hope was that it could be recycled and reucsed for this but the technology is not yet available. France like England and Germany also uses DU for ammunition and armor plate as do other nations not in the NATO block,
In storage and shipment in sealed containers the DU is safer than some natural substances as long as it is not mixed with water or , if it is in metalic form safer yet as it does not emit anything like the emissions from natural uranium like what is in the adirondacs for example.

Don't knw where your info came from but his dad was not another John Kerry and DU while certainly toxic is not as dangerous as it is claimed to be.... not that I would want to be exposed to the powder or the gasses of course but the main problem is short term breathing problems and no known long term effects so far just speculation with no scientific proof yet to back it up.
