Anyone here using facebook and sharing photos via Instagram ? -- bill, 19:11:55 12/18/12 Tue (71.172.182.98)
Photo-sharing site says it now has the right to sell your photos
Dear CNET members,
Imagine this: you're at a beach in Hawaii, snapping photos of your family having the time of their lives. Later, you upload them to your favorite photo-sharing site to show your family and friends on your social network, not giving it a second thought. Two years from now, you go to a travel site to book another trip to Hawaii, and lo and behold, you see a familiar-looking photo in an advertisement for the Hawaii resort you are looking into. You look a bit closer and you realize that in the advertisement is a picture of your kids at the beach that you took two years ago! You wrack your brains trying to figure out how it happened, who did it, and why.
If you think this scenario is a bit frightening or just can't be, you better take note of this report by CNET writer Declan McCullagh: "Instagram says it now has the right to sell your photos." Declan reports that with the first major policy shift since Facebook bought the photo-sharing site, Instagram claims the right to sell users' photos without payment or notification. And if you don't opt out of this by deleting your Instagram account by January 16, you can't opt out of it afterward.
So what do you think of this new policy? Do you care that your photos could potentially be used or sold for commercial purposes without being notified? Or do you believe that this is just part of business, and because it's a free site and the photos that you post on Instagram are made public, this shouldn't be a shock to anyone? If you are a user of Instagram, are you going to opt out before the deadline? If you aren't a user of Instagram, does this change how you would use photo-sharing sites in general, and how so? Read Declan's article and share how you feel!

A little news for those who took philosophy with Bill Congdon: my dad is in hospital in Victoria, Texas having just had his appendix out last week. He's living in a nursing home near my brother Bill (Billy, he was in FC days) and has been in declining health for some years. His memory isn't good anymore and while he still knows who people are and such, he has trouble recalling much about Franconia days -- something that's true of a lot of folks, I suspect!
In any event, good wishes/prayers/positive

slumping towards Bethlehem... -- marita dempster kuzey (cheerfully observant), 07:48:53 08/24/12 Fri (88.244.186.141)
This is a message of thanks (but no thanks) and gratitude to Adelina Axelrod Winston Watnik Nancy Garrett et. al. who have, over the past few years, sought to entice me onto Facebook w/ repeated invites - i am flattered and grateful that anyone actually still remembers me, but having lived under the radar and off the grid for so long i am loathe to present any type of profile for sneaky surveillance activities. (Ý'm writing this on a public computer at the local library in a backwater town of the
Turkish Aegean). By now i've lived more (much more) of my life outside the U.S. than in and still cringe at the idea of coming in from the cold...(for what? those dwindling Baby Boomer entitlements...)Living the marginal homesteading lifestyle in the 3rd world suits me (for those who remember my buxom frame i am now a clean lean machine of necessity - it takes a lot of energy to live like this) and anyway the party for the whole planet is definitely over and i would dub this summer's global weather (either drought or flood overall indicating a serious imbalance in the global weather system) the first breach into a new irreversible era of catastrophic climatic changes which in turn will engender a desparate and vicious scramble for remaining energy sources.
So let's celebrate ourselves and our golden youth and all the crazy fun times we had but don't forget that the world
(its weather its geopolitics) slipped out of gear on our generation's watch, that it was bad boy Bill Clinton (the guy who felt so familiar to us like the guy you'd pass the joint to at a party)who signed the NAFTA Act and let slip the dogs of global trade loose as well as repealing the Glass-Steagal Act and let the bankers off their hooks hence the current banking conundrum.
Also for the first time since i quit U.S. shores i will not be voting in the upcoming election it's obvious at this point there's no real policy differences between the two parties, just differences of degree or emphasis. Obama
the Nobelpeace prize drone-prince has both broken my heart and stunned me with brazenly casual dismissal of constitutional rights at home his dismissive attitude towards international law his 'kill lists' etcç - in particular his craven stance towards the Ýsraeli lobby and failure to support the Palestinians is one of expedient moraw cowardice. Boycott the elction!!!
Ý shall chime in from time to time now that i have found the Franconia Pages - greetings to Skip Lau of whom i have fond memories (as his Film Night asst. he used to pay me in hash) Ýs Bill Congdon still alive anybody know?
cheers from the phryghana - marita

Anyone remember ? -- bill, 07:13:01 08/21/12 Tue (71.172.173.208)
Just curious if anyone remembers the SOP manual we printed in the shop when we got that awful unbleached greenish grey early recycled paper for the college manual the year Leon came in .
At least I think it was his first year when that happened but it might have been the second.
It was also the year that the womens studies program came into being with an office on the fourth floor funded by what used to be the budget for the print shop.
At that time admin decided we needed to try the new recycled paper which was still an unbleached natural paper at the time so had that distinctive color.
I believe it was flipp who decided we had to print an SOP manual because the color suggested that series of military publications to him.
Flip was one of if not my only artistic emplyees at the time. Helen was another but I don't remember the time line as well as I should. Our discussion about whgat to do with the ugly paper we had been given resulted in the SOP manual and I wish I still had a copy of it but don't think there is one hiding here anywhere.
Anyone have one ?
