The USDOJ has posted a lot of documents on their site that make for interesting reading, particularly the chronology of events. If you believe everything you read, the genetic analysis technology that allowed investigators to determine that the contents of Bruce's flask were one and the same as the stuff that had been mailed out to people more or less at random did not exist at the time. Although it is not entirely clear that this combination of mutations found in the bottle does not exist in any other place, of the 1000 or so different lab samples that were tested across the country only this one batch had the markers. I think Ivins had some serious explaining to do, particularly because when asked for a sample from his jug (which only he had custody and control of) to test he apparently submitted a bogus sample. That's consciousness of guilt.

Well, we'll never get to ask him why he did what he did, whatever it was that he did.

All of which has me wondering. For a country that's forsworn the use of biological weapons we're doing an awful lot of studying a bug that's been around and has been lethal for hundreds of years.
