Subject: Blue spot in a red state.....
In reply to: Lenore 's message, "Re: obama spin" on 03:24:33 08/11/08 Mon

New Orleans was a blue spot in what is otherwise a
very red state. In recent years, democratic candidates for
statewide office have needed the New Orleans vote to get them
over the top. Suggestions have been made that the republicans
wanted to leave New Orleans basically destroyed in order to
break up the city's blue constituency so incumbant
democratic senator Mary Landrieu could be defeated in her
re-election bid in '08. Leaving much of the city unrestored
or giving it over to developers for gentrification
with new high-rise condos and casinos could in their minds
accomplish this and allow the republicans to gain another
senate seat. After the republicans lost their senate majority in the '06 elections, getting Landrieu out became even more important. When Landrieu first won the seat in
1996, her republican opponent Woody Jenkins, an avowed racist kept ranting if it wasn't for those damn n.....s in New Orleans, I'd be in the senate now. After his defeat, Jenkins had little to do except wrap himself in a
confederate flag and go to KKK gatherings giving speeches
about how the south won't be great again until we reimpose
slavery.
