I didn't get to FC till the following winter ( fall trimester ? ) and so I missed it but I believe they Made snow for that weekend and the weather was warm enough to melt it enough for it to turn to mostly ice overnight which sort of set those saplings like they were in concrete ( or so Tony said and he should know ) .
They were of course supposed to remove any poles or other obstructions at the end of the day but someone missed that duty and Tony did not know they were " cememnted " in place when he decided to try the run.
Had they been removed and replaced there most likely would not have been any problem as they would have come free if hit.
Instead they stayed there and stopped his leg like it had hit a wall.

Charlie did have issues with possible problems if he got a repeat of the frostbite on the inside of that leg but those Damart Thermalactyl long johns are wonderful for protection from the cold though as I haeard it they are now out of business ( ? ) and the product is no longer being made ( or maybe it is now made somewhere else like china and has a different name ? ) .
Both Tony and Charlie were the first people I heard use the term " rock skis " to describe old skis used for really bad conditions on the slopes which were something of a regular occurrance on Cannon mt. Boiler plate and mud in the crossing spots were not unusual occurrances and it was said that if you could ski Cannon mt. for an entire season you could ski anywhere i the world becuas you would have found every possible ski condition by the end of the season.
I do remember when they had record snowfalls and deep powder and the ski slopes called the college and told us that anyone who wanted could ski for free since they needed the slopes packed down for the weekend and they could not do it with the equipment. I think almost everyone in the area who could ski went for the free day. I know the college cleared out and most courses were cancelled for the day. Since I had not been on skis for at least ten years I didn't go and have regretted that as there were co0nditions that were supposed to have been like skiing the back side of Aspen that day.
I can't imagine anyone being able to get hurt since falling down was almost impossible though slogging through the deep powder can be very difficult and I suppose if you got worn out the deep snow would almost hold you up onm your feet....
