True , when I came there was a definate group of " alkys, and a definate group of " smokers " with not all that much of the other stuff around at least not openly.
However one must remember that for at least part of that era the feds had not yet begun classifying many common recreational drugs in the way they are now defined.

Many alcoloids are now called " narcotics " which is scientificvally incorrect and I do not even think they had decided that LSD had a category before I started at FC.
Also there was a rather open use of rcreational drugs on the west coast before it began to show up in the east and the " summer of love" that took a bad turn into harder drugs out there was a precursor to the national anti drug movement that created the famous " war on drugs " that was not then what it is now.
There was a lot of international movement of organics that brought in many more powerful strains than what was commonly grown here for decades if not centuries ( remember that George Washington grew up on and farmed on his own a " hemp crop " that was mainly for use as rope fiber but that even then it was chewed and smoked by many people as an alternative to alcohol which , just by coincidence was the first thing the US government decided to tax after fighting an expensive war of liberation against the crown over the excessive taxes imposed then found themselves unable to pay off the war debt without putting in place taxes of our own.....

Of course this also began the illicit distillation of alcohol by those who refused to pay a tax while the " law abiding " citizens , like george who had his opwn still payed the tax and were legal and above board.

But back to the drug thing it was so much in it's infancy at the time that when a car full of head was stopped with a smoke filled vehicle it was not uncommon to tell the officer there had been a fire in the ashtray and they would not be asked anyuthing more as most officers had not yet even had a chance to smell what cannabis smelled like.
