Yes, the commitment to the concept of "community" meant that people with a short time commitment to the community (students) had equal input into setting long term policies. Also, the people with an interest in political discourse enjoyed, or at least were willing, to sit on the committees that set policy. The artsy types, that were in great supply, were less willing or interested in committee work. Therefore it is no surprise that the committee policy makers thought the institution should become more involved with the politics of the new revolution. Good intentions do not often make for good business.
Could have the school stayed open as a respite for the artsy children of the financially privileged and their financially aided fellow artists instead of trying to be the epicenter for the next generation of revolutionaries? Maybe, but the place was on shaky footing even in its best days.
