No relations with China was the " containment strategy " developed by the Truman admin and their state department people who did not include any of the China experts because they werenot supportive of the Chang group whom they thought were a bunch of thieves. Cutting off china when the communists got full control mainly because they were the ones helping out the common man while the chang group filled their coffers and sold out.

By the time Nixon came along the chinese and the russians were not fast friends any more. time to try and repair the rift with the chinese but probably a bit late.

We do have paper ballots but usually when the machines can't be used.... lots of chance to stuff the ballot box though with them and also switch ballots for your own party advantage. That was actually done between polling places and counting places while the trucks were moving at least a few times.

Maybe Rbt Heinlein had the right idea when he wrote starship troopers. to vote you had to do military service.
if you did not go in the military you got everything for free but no vote for who ran the show. can't buy votes for freebees that way but of course the millitary ends up running the show...
