If I remember right Eddies was blue. Tony had the silver with black racing stripes Firebird but if I am right it was a 400ho not a 455ho. I did get to ride in Tonys car but Eddie put his in the gale before I really got to know him. Don't remember what he got to replace it though.
The pontiac engines which were their own design were real tourque monsters which was what made them so good at straight line acceleration. The Chevy engines which became the GM standard eventually werte better for high speed operation which was one reason they were so successful in racing like nascar and sprint. Of course once you got into the unlimited modifieds all bets were off and the chrysler corporation engines like the hemis were one of the best platforms for that.
Ford of course had their entries as well and once they got out of the rut they were in from the fifties they broke out with some very good engines in all levels of engine development. Personally I think it was quite difficult to beat the poncho motor especially the ram air and 4355 versions however they were discontinued when the feds got into the act with a lot of air pollution regs and the insurance regs that ultimately kiled the traditional muscle cars.
Pontiac was one of the first to put silicone steel valves into their engine for low lead gasoline beginning in 69 I think , I did have them in the 71 LeMans 350 which , while it was no high power monster, was one damn fine engine just not one that could be easily modified so not desireable once they were out of production. Wrong bottom end and not compatible with the 400 and 455 which were the same block while the 350 was different block all on it's own.
Chevy of course had small blocks as well as big blocks just as all the other makers. Pontiac however did not have a small block even though the original v8 they developed was almost a small block so the 350 was probably the closest they came even though it was identical to the other pontiac blocks outside of the relationship between the crank and cam locations. They all could use the same heads but it was not really worth doing it to the 350.
