Hi Arthur,
Nice to hear from you too. Jon's name isn't ringing a bell.
I read about the fires. I think Pie Town had a problem with bears running campers off this summer also. What is Galisteo like?
Buckhorn is at the north end of Grant County, about 40 miles nw of Silver on hwy 80, mostly cattle ranches, mesquite, and cacti. One of the women I stayed with, Mildred Drummond, was about 90. Her family walked up to Buckhorn with their covered wagon and staked land when NM became a state, 1916, I believe. Her mother was a midwife, so just about anyone over 60 in that part of the county was delivered by Mildred's mom. There were more people in Grant County she was related to than not.
There is a post office and little RV park as you pass through and Leroy's Liquor Store on the other side of the street. If more than three or four cars went by during the day, Mildred would complain about the heavy traffic.
