I remember when salting was something they only did on major highways and people got snow tires and used chains in the winter because the secondary roads were not salted , might have some sanding done or might not be plowed at all in some places.
Most of us didn't have four wheel drive but people could get around without it anyhow.
Now of course we have all season radial tires that may or may not work depening on the amopunt of snow one has to drive through and a lot of cars are four wheel drive or all wheel drive ( which is not the same thing since it usually splits the efforet unevenly between the front and rear wheels for tractive effort ) and a lot of people have more confidence than is warranted in what their cars or whatever can actually do as well as not having the proper training in winter driving to handle all situations.

Of course anyone from the north country should have the necessary skills and experience for the winter but that doesn't mean everyone who is up there now grew up with the conditions they have to deal with.

Down this way they probably do a lot more than is actually necessary in a lot of places just to satisfy the drivers who are really not up to the conditions , a sort of overkill for safeties sake.
On the other hand some people will get stuck or have acidents no matter what they are dealing with , not as well trained as our earlier generations were and some not used to a lot of snow due to having driven in the less taxing winters that were around for so long .

NH always seemed to do a pretty darn good job on their roads even if it might take a bit longer than down in the lower states and that might be because they knew they would be dealing with a lot of out of state winter sports entusiasts some of whom really don't have the skills for winter driving even if they are good on the slopes.

Betcha they have some NH style road work around the Vermont ski areas and on the western edge where a lot of people come up to get to them.

I do remember driving some of the VT roads in winter where good winter skills were a necessity . some of the interior north south routes were pretty interesting in that way.
Of course I had the Vdub with the oversized winter tires on it and it was sort of like driving a snowmobile not a car and solid as a rock when other people were scared to drive at a reasonable speed because they had overweight unbalanced front to rear cars with light rear ends and heavy noses. Passed a lot of people in the unplowed lanes while they were slogging along in the plowed part worrying on major roads being cleared. even passed the snow plows sometimes .
I remember going down to Logan to pick some people up one winter when I passed the state plow in the notch , did the pickup ad returned . The next morning I found out the plow had turned around because he couldn't make it through the notch and they waited till the snow stopped and the winds that were driving like a ground blizzard died down to clear the way through.
