It is a great loss, but thanks to the technology of Johannes Gutenburg and the tireless curiosity of Zinn himself, we have a great record of his observations, insights and his analytical style, which - very unusually for academics of his generation - was centered on identifying and overcoming his own preconceptions and prejudices.

Zinn was a master at cutting through rhetoric and getting to the practical meaning of communications - political, historical and sociological. He was fearless in staking out and defending unpopular positions he believed to be true, and enough of a scholar to always be open to questioning his own reasoning and conclusions.

He was a rare sort of thinker, who could be both embrace passionate advocacy and strive for intellectual objectivity. His body may no longer be animate and his spirit incarnate, but his ideas and methodology should continue to inspire and inform for decades - if not centuries - to come....

I can't tell you how many friends and relatives I've given his books to, as primers on "alternative " political insight.... They've been very effective and most appreciated.

I hope Jeff can take some comfort in that, although I know that the pain of that loss is enormous and my sympathies are with him and his family.
