Not many 4x4s back then as I remember it but a lot of snow tires and studded snows as well as some poeple who put chains on their car for deep snow.
Front wheel drive was something new that was very popular from the Saabs which had been around for quite a while to the Renault models that were enjoying new found popularity and of course Subaru which was just beginning to take a major share of the market with their newest styled models.

I was VW person and they were like snowmobiles if you put snow tires on them , even had a belly pan bottom so the car acted a lot like a snowmobile with the front wheels like skis and the snow passing mostly unobstructed below while the fifty plus percent weighting tothe rear made rear wheel drive practical unlike most american cars with too much weight up front so if you lost it it would just follow the engine weight wherever that was headed.

But we forget how well they were handling the snow on the roads up in NH when we were there at college. There were few parts of the country where a better job of keeping the roads clear was done. We really did not need 4x4s back then.
