Still not much in the way of progress with the leak. Lot's of finger pointing going on to try and shift blame.
We do now know what the cause was , a methane bubble that got past the safety systems and exploded before it could be stopped. No one knows if the Blowout preventer was working properly or just was not able to work in time though survivors from the bridge of the drill platform say the emergency system was engaged and the biutton ( or whatever ) pushed.
No one can even say just how much oil is being released so far. the size of the well casing would limit the amount but is also dependent on the pressure from the oil and gas being pushed through it. That can no longer be measured since the amounts of each cannot be measured and there are more than one spots leaking in the wrecked assembly from the rig.
Apparently the drilling had stopped , they were in the process of setting it up to tap the supply then something went wrong areleased the methane bubble which exploded then set fire to the mix of oil and natural gas which caused the sinking and the additional damage.

Highly likely that there could have been a lot better safety proceedures and that better equipment is necessary to prevent another such event. Blowout preventers for that depth probably are inadequate, should be some sort of containment at the sea floor level as well, better oversight, better proceedures and untimately either relief from oil dependency or a better way to get the underwater oil than what has been used so far.

I think they said the other day that there are 30 thousand or so off shore wells that have been drilled and that while there have been other leaks and incidents this is the first really disasterous incident of them all.

Hope the high estimates of the amounts are wrong and that what ever they do to control the oil released works without causing more problems.
