Subject: Lori - "hell" wasn't exactly what I had in mind...

... but having been involved in the organization of the Y2KR and remembering the complications even within that friendly, forgiving, tolerant, diverse and flexible group, I have to say I was concerned by the (seemingly, to me) self-appointed "organizers" of the proposed event and the tone and attitude they seemed to be adopting.

The Y2KR event had more than a dozen folks involved, from all eras of the school's history, many of whom didn't know each other well - and some of whom had never met each other - before the organizing process began.

In this case, those involved seem to be drawn from a small circle of friends and acquaintances - looking disturbingly like a "clique' to me - whose first act was to cut off discussion on possible alternative dates for the event and impose their own.

Of course, decisions have to be made and someone will object to almost any decision, but in this case it didn't seem to me - from what I saw here - that alternative ideas were gladly entertained (or even seriously considered at all). To my mind, that doesn't bode well for the process, nor for the final product.

Of course, it's easy to misunderstand and misinterpret what one reads on the internet, a "conversation," basically, rather than a carefully crafted "essay" - but devoid of the markers of body language, facial expression and tone of voice that add so much to face-to-face conversations. So maybe what is concerning to me is only in my own head. I hope so.

As I said before, if Winston & Friends want to gather in Franconia to celebrate their time there, that's fine with me and I wish them nothing but well. But I wouldn't want anyone - Winston's group or any other - to imagine that the idea of a "reunion" or "gathering" is their property, and that their event is the only "official" (how ridiculous that would be in terms of Franconia's whole philosophy and practice) opportunity for those who remember their Franconia experiences with affection and awe to find their own ways of sharing that together.

To that end, ten years on, I'm proposing creation of the Franconia 2010 Transcendental Reunion Yearsbook. I edited the original Y2KR version, and I'm offering my services again, to collect, compile and prepare for publication, writing, artwork and any other suitable contributions from folks connected to Franconia.

If people are interested, we can publish it in hard-copy format through POD publishers for a low cost - about the same as last time- $10-15/copy, depending on length, format, number of copies, etc - or we can just go with a "virtual" version on the internet, in .pdf format that those interested can download and print out for themselves if they wish.... it could be "heavenly!"

Any takers?
