I think it depends a lot on how independent the districts are and what their funding base is like. A lot of the large public systems are cutting back on the " electives " thanks to rising costs. A lot of the more independent districts where money is not as tight can keep things on the curriculum that are thought less important when how to spend public dollars is a consideration.
There is however a movement to get back a lot of the " elective " subjects that got cut back in previous years. MAny districts have discovered that cutting the arts and other non required subjects leads to a less rtesponsive student body ( maybe it's an all work no play thing ? ) and that blind pursuit of higher test scores on the subjects that are required can be detrimental to the process.

We'll see what develops , maybe we can have our cake and eat it too. Kids need the less academic subjects and pursuits or they go stale a lot too quickly and end up aas square not well rounded ......
