The face mask either the paper filter or more " upscale" fabric type used in many parts of the globe is more a simple precaution that people take to cut down the chance of inhaling airborne particles or if they already are sick then to be less prone to passing them on.
My take if that a lot of westerners are just opposed to usig them because they thin they are funny looking not on effectiveness. It's as much a cultural as a scientific thing.
Hell Fred a lot of people don't even wash their hands when they should. Soap and water is probably a more effective health precaution than most things that get a lot of publicity or discussion.

The real problem with communicables is the fast pace of global travel these days. with high speed international travel something can go from anywhere in the world to anywhere else in a matter of hours now rather than days or weels , months or years. The 1918 flu epidemic took years to go global but when it did it was devastating. The potential is that the same thing now can happen in weeks or months. Of course on the plus side it is also a quicker recognition time frame and much better methodology to combat communicable disease. Now if they can get that tailoring a cure thing down to a reasonable quick time frame we will all be a lot safer in the future.
