I agree with most of your points. Many of the quality problems with the Chevy Vega, arguably one of the worst cars
GM ever produced, were connected to the constant labour strife
that plagued the Lordstown, OH plant were the Vega and its
siblings were made. GM never fully resolved the labour issues
at Lordstown during the production life of the Vega. There are
plenty of stories about Lordstown in those days. One such
story was that assembly line workers often set cars on fire
as they moved down the line which would shut the line down for several hours while they removed the burned-out hulk from
the line and resequencied everything. This gave sufficient time for the workers to head down to the local watering hole and have a couple of brews while supervisors were sorting out the mess.
One thing that I would like to see is global harmonization of safety and emission requirements.
Right now, cars have to be made in two ways, U.S. and
rest of the world.
If that could be eliminated and an
all world standard created, it would vastly increase
product choice on the U.S. and probably reduce costs as
manufacturers could build all product to a single standard.
