You might as well ask what did Willaim Tell's refusal to bow to secular authority accomplish? or what did Ghandi-ji's refusal to submit to the Salt Tax accomplish? or what did Nelson Mandela's 24 years in prison accomplish? or Socrates suicide (to put an FC spin on it!)

Nothing...and everything. Sometimes a symbolic gesture of outrage and resistance is what's required. Sometimes it's all that is possible and futile in its own context - but it makes other things possible.
