example one : high speed bullet train , runs between two fixed points, costs billions to get started. Main appeal is to the elitist traveller in a hurry to go no where fast. Ignores the people alongside of the tracks. Requires massive government cash infusions to stay in operation.
Runs on money.cannot be run except on basically flat terrain.

Also Supertrain, the series, good for almost half of the season then fails to deliver on the promise of the pre-release Hype.

Example two : AMtrack special costs billions to create then cuts back service until only the bulk freight can keep it above water. Nothing for the passenger but gets the heavy freight delivered to where it needs to be then moved by the private sector. Example of failing government programs that keep draining money from other more useful activities. Runs on OIL,money, pollutes. Probably needs at least one pusher engine at the back of the train.

Example three: basic steam train. Runs on readilly available domestic fuel ( coal ) built the country. Example of steady progress and private enterprise.
Killed by the government after giving it's all to the country in time of war. Cast off to give the real profits to the budding trucking industry which the government subsidized.
Needed massive infusuions of cash ( from the private sector )to rebuild after war service (that the government never paid a cent for) but came back on it's own for the most part. Kept service to the passenger trade until regulations and costs made competition with the automobile and busses too expensive for continuation. Went to freight for the most part and changed over to oil to avoid regulations against smoke pollution ( from mostly local governments ) so it could still serve the cities.
Workhorse of the national economy and builder of new commerce. Could go anywhere that a reasonable grade could be run, and some places where that was not possible, by adapting to the terrain and using innovative technologies.

Example four : Thomas the tank engine ?
That's not even a US series for heavens sake comes from Britain could have picked a better picture at least, or are we talking the other engine in the background coming to Thomas's aid after he fell off the track ?

Anyhow: example of developing future generations , educational toy , series promotes service to fellow citizens and teaches lessons on dealing with the real world.

Made from organic materials for the most part( wood) and uses no polluting fuels whatsoever.
Runs on human power and imagingation opens up possibillities for the future.
Promotes education, can be moved anywhere and still do the same job it was intended for.
