One thing that separates Powell from the other Army officers
that achieve high rank is that Powell is not a West Point graduate. Powell went to CCNY and majored in geology.
City offered ROTC at the time and Powell enrolled in
it and found he really liked it. He graduated in 1958 and
received his army commission which led to a 35 year career
in the military. Consequently, Powell was more or less outside
of the ole boy network of West Point alums and had to
advance strictly on his own merit rather than by the existing
rule, it's not who you are, but who you know. Powell was
also a rather likable character and higher ranking officers
will quite willing to mentor him in the system. He
became an assistant to Reagan-era defense secretary Casper
Weinberger in the run-up to the 1983 Grenada invasion and
Weinberger was extremely impressed with Powell who basically
put Powell's career in high gear which allowed him to get
to the very top. Had Powell not become Weinberger's assistant, it is very doubtful that Powell as a non ole
boy West Pointer
would have made to the top echelons.
