 He had just got done carrying a sleeping Alex out to Sam's car, and looked like he really enjoyed doing that for her. He then said he had something to take care of, and he went to Kerry's office to remove the resignation from her in-box. So yes, it seems Alex and Sam are the sole reason he stayed.
