I bought my oldest son his first car this week. This is the first time I have ever talked a seller UP in price.

One of the young men I supervise at work was involved in a minor accident almost a year ago. This guy is so frugal with his money that he pocketed the insurance money, never had the car fixed, then refused to put out money to have a tow truck take it away for him. It's a 1993 Toyota Camry XLE with the V6. The only things wrong with it was it was hit from the front and needs a new headlight, grille and hood. There is also a significant (visually) dent in the passenger rear quarter panel. I managed to straighten out the metal under the hood to get it to latch again, but I will be getting a hood from a boneyard when I get the chance, I have a new headlight on order, and the grille is a minor issue. The car is mechanically in perfect shape and has every option available for that year model, power seats, windows, locks, sunroof, etc. AM/FM, cassette with 5 disc changer, A/C, tilt wheel and more. It is a very mechanically sound car with 133K miles on it and the interior still looks new.

As far as talking him up in price, when I asked him about the car he said he would just give it to me. Because the Air Force has a rule against accepting gifts from subordinates, I had to pay for the car. I offered $10 and he accepted. I talked him up form free to $10. Not a bad deal for a first car for my son. (BTW, I made a profit already, I sold it to my son for $15)
