In the road trip thread I see that Johnny K (Jarlaxle) now has a 1979 Ford repowered with a Cummins 6BT. Figured he might get a kick out of the truck I purchased last month.

The 1994 Suburban K2500 was no longer meeting our needs and the 8-9mpg thanks to the 454 and 4.10 gears meant that it was rarely driven anymore. It was still running strong at 186,000 miles. With some anguish, it has been sold.

I was kind of going back and forth whether to buy brand new or used. I had been keeping an eye on used 1995-1998 4x4 Dodge Rams with the 12 valve Cummins turbo-diesel and manual transmissions. Came across this 1997 and decided to go ahead and buy it.

1997 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT Laramie
5.9l Cummins 6BT
NV4500 5 speed transmission
NV241HD transfer case
Dana 80 limited slip rear, Dana 60 front, 4.10 gears
PW, PDL, PM, AC, pretty much loaded for that model year.

Needed a few small things. The cracked windshield was replaced. As was the fuel level sender, a power window switch, and an actuator for the dash vents.

I have also removed the timing case cover and taken care of the dowel pin (KDP) that may come loose and do significant damage when it falls into the timing gears. Probably the only shortcoming of the Cummins 6BT and it is not very difficult to use an ounce of prevention to avoid a pound of cure.

The truck had a 2" leveling kit and worn out 315/75R16 Load Range D tires on 16x8 wheels on it when I bought it. I replaced the tires with a set of new Toyo Open Country M/T 315/75R16 Load Range E tires that turned out to be a good bit larger than than the previous tires. So some DT Profab extended link arms were added to set the front axle an extra 1/2" forward which allieviated some minor rubbing issues on the front wheel well liners. All is good now.

Now it just needs a few mild bombs. Thinking #11 torque plate, 3K GSK, and a 4" exhaust somewhere down the road. I'll probably add some Billstein 5100s in the near future and an adjustable track bar when it comes time to replace the stock one, too.
