In Question 5 two main points are presented, the psychological aspect of genetic testing and the professionals responsibility toward their patients. In response to the first question, I feel that with any other medical diagnosis it is important for the physician to be able to council the patient. When cancer, for example, is diagnosed it strongly advised by the doctor to seek help in support groups. I think that genetics as a scientific field should not branch out to into the psychological work . I think it is the responsibility of the physician to recommend a means for the patient to find a way to cope with their newly acquired knowledge.
As for the second part of the question addressing the physician's role in the emotions of guilt or anger I think that it is ideal for the physician to try and show the patient that the result are no one person's fault. Anger and guilt are emotions of ignorance many times and to combat that it is necessary to prove to the patient that the technology of his or her parents was in not way able to predict what can be known today. I think, as I previously stated, that it is necessary to provide mental support. It really is hard enough to have a disease from external measures but even harder knowing that what was passed on was genetically linked and unable to be altered.
