Lauren is right in feeling a very complex mix of emotions. First a patient could go into a state of self pity, asking, "Why me?" then anger at their parents, and/or God for saddeling them with a genetic mutation. The patient could also feel anger or lonliness if their sibling did not have the mutation. They could also feel guilt for feeling the anger towards their sibling because they should feel happy. They could also feel genuine happiness for their sibling if they are spared because their lif does not have to be disrupted.
The sibling could feel relief along with guilt that they do not have the mutation. Their guilt could drive them to help their sibling who has the mutation with any care or assistance they may need.
