I feel that Janet has a good reason to be tested because she is so fearful of the future. If it will help her sleep easier at night knowing whether or not she will develop the disease, then she should get the results and deal with that information. I am not sure that I would be able to deal with knowing, though, because if there was no treatment, I would just be worried about something that I had no control over. I think it is a good reason to be tested if the disease you are being tested for can be prevented, slowed down, or even cured. I do not think it is a good reason to be tested if the test is only telling you that you are at a higher or lower risk for developing some disease, like Janet's test results showed. If the test results say that you are at a higher risk, one may feel like you are stuck with the disease and if they show that you are at a lower risk, one may believe that they are completely free from the disease. It is called a risk because there is still a chance of developing the disease, no matter how great or small. What is the point of worrying about something that you have no control over?
This question reminds me of when Mrs. Roman was deciding whether or not to have an amniocentesis to see if there is a possibility that there is anything wrong with her baby. She said why should I have it done just to worry for nine months about what may or not be if the test comes back that the baby may be at a higher risk for something, I worry enough as it is. I agree with this attitude, but in the end it is up to the individual and they have to decide what is right for them.
