Lietenant Molter confirms that Twilight has, in fact, infiltrated the new Council, when she refers to a “man on the inside”. With 500 slayers (and a probably greater number of support personnel) on the rolls, this could refer to almost anybody, but the most likely, because most useful, infiltrator would be someone close to the center of things – someone in, or close to, the core group of Scoobies.

Which of the Scoobies would want to end the magic in the world ? Who would benefit from its’ removal ? At first glance, probably none of them. But if we rephrase the question, we get a different answer.

Which of the Scoobies has suffered because of the magic? Every. Single. One. All of our core group have lost something, or someone, over the years. All of them have reason to resent the way their lives have turned out. Dawn seems pretty miserable; people her age often are, for reasons having nothing to do with magic, but she may not realize that. Xander lost Anya, and before that, Jesse. Willow lost Tara, and her whole life, possibly even her basic nature, has been changed. Is she even human anymore? Does she wish she were?

Of them all, Buffy has suffered the most. She wanted to be, and briefly was, a prom queen and cheerleader. Instead she was drafted against her will into a job that keeps her busy 24/7, doesn’t pay, involves crushing resposibility, doesn’t offer any time off or vacations, and doesn’t allow for early (or any) retirement. She can’t win, she can’t break even, and she can’t get out of the game – she couldn’t even get free of her burden by dying. Of course, that’s part of what makes her a hero; but she never really wanted to be a hero in the first place, and she’s tried to quit several times. She’s living a life she didn’t want, she feels and is isolated, and she’s not happy about it, as shown by her reaction to Xander’s suggestion that she needs “alone time” (“what other kind is there ?”).

If the magic goes away, Buffy will be free, or possibly dead – but she’s already been dead, and she was happier then than she is now. Equally important to someone with her sense of responsibility, she will have discharged her duty – people will be safe from the monsters, because the monsters will be gone. Heroes aren’t supposed to change sides, but this wouldn’t be changing sides; it would be changing the whole game, as she did when she had Willow activate the Potentials. From a certain POV ( a rather depressed one, perhaps), it would be a win-win situation. Buffy would be better off, and so would the world.

Buffy would never, IMO, consciously subvert her mission. Her subconscious is harder to predict. The Slayer whatever-it-is is still in there. the Shadowmen recruited it for their purposes – could Twilight somehow recruit it for his ? The FE found a way to manipulate Spike’s demon – could Twilight find a way to manipulate Buffy’s ? Could Buffy be the inside man and not even realize it ?

I’m actually inclined to think the answer to that one is “no”, that the Slayer Spirit would make her more resistant to manipulation rather than less so. But Giles may suspect that she is, or that someone close to her is – and that could be why he seems to have separated himself from her.
