And then there's John Wayne.

In "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", he's the guy who ruthlessly guns down the villain that the civilized Ransom Stoddard can't defeat; and by doing so destroys the life he's been trying to build. In "The Shootist", he's the aging gunfighter that nobody wants around, that cleans out the local saloon in a final kamikaze mission. And in a scene that Joss himself imitated in "Age of Ultron"; "The Searchers" opens with a scene shot through a doorway, of Wayne's character riding out of the wilderness, and ends with a scene shot through a different doorway, as he walks BACK into the wilderness that spawned him.

We need him, but we really don't like having him around; he doesn't really belong in the house with us, he belongs OUT THERE somewhere.

But as Nick Fury says of the Avengers in the first film, he'll come back, because we'll need him to.

So maybe Buffy is still out there somewhere, and she'll come back when we need her to.
