I'm glad that this site is still up, and I do have it bookmarked. I had thought that Buffy would long be discussed and maybe even taught in university courses because of the philophical sophistication in the stories generally.
I'm 85 and male, so I'm not the normal fan, I suspect. I recall that I loved Superman, and that my father thought such stuff was trash. He couldn't wait until I was old enough to read the Tarzan books that he had read way back in 1920. I loved them, but I could see that Tarzan was a superhero, too. From being raised by anthropoid apes, he had strength and agility similar to theirs. And he could follow a "spoor" by scent alone. Unlike the movies, he was quite well spoken, and he was a polyglot, as he could speak several languages--not counting the language of the apes, of course!
Oh, and I do remember that Superman didn't fly at first. He could simply jump very high.
In any case, humankind seems to have a long history of loving stories of superheroes. I remember that I much preferred the demigod Hercules to the demigod Jesus!
