Subject: Special mention - slight spoilers Torchwood Episode 5 'Small Worlds'

Episode 5 didn't disappoint.

Torchwood has now come into its own. You could of course draw parallels with certain other plots, Star Trek TOS 'Wink of an Eye' is vaguely similar but the Faerie setting alters the flavour and the horror is more up front. These are the Elves that our ancestors feared would come out of the wild wooded places of the earth to cast their enchantments and cause their mischief.

My reservations about the one-off nature of the plots continue although I think this could be addressed (and possibly will be) by shorter establishing shots and more dialogue. There's quite a bit of 'dead time' (cars screeching along streets, amongst other things, we have all seen before and get the idea quite quickly). A little more thought and effort in some regards would sell the conceit rather better - you don't have to see the FX guy in shot to know he made that hole with a circular saw, if only he'd spent 30 mins ‘distressing’ the edges and making the shape a bit less regular it'd jar a lot less. Is there a 'hole' metaphor beginning to emerge? Quite possibly.

On the whole (sorry) however highly creepifying, it's raised the bar again and long may it continue to do so.
