I have obviously opened up a hornet’s nest here (well actually Kevin did but then he left it to me to carry the torch). I went back and viewed Chosen. I see Anya killing at least two UVs, Andrew wrestling with one, Giles and Wood killing numerous UVs, even one-eyed Xander smashing one and Dawn attacking one. These Turok-Han guys, far from being super vampires, are complete wusses.
The writers wanted to set up the big duel scene in Showtime where Buffy defeats the undefeatable and thereby raises the Potentials morale. They also, in Get it Done, wanted to dramatically indicate the overwhelming challenge facing the good guys. Unfortunately, they were stuck with thousands and thousands of virtually impregnable creatures. What to do, what to do? Well how about we ignore everything that previously occurred? Works for me.
In terms of wanking, I understand the concept of bringing your own sub-text and the freedom of every viewer to create a satisfying story. I just need some supportable rationale to go along with the wank. I think the question of vampire fighting strength has always been fluid and employed by the writers in the service of the story. One week, Buffy fights to within an inch of her life against a single vampire, the next she dusts seven without breaking a sweat. I guess she is just incredibly lucky that she never runs into a gang of those tough vamps. I recognize that the writers need to keep things fresh and must stage different fights with different degrees of difficulty. No problem there. My only problem is when we try to pretend that the Buffyverse is some internally consistent verse that has some working physics that govern the story. This is not a claim that Joss has ever made; he has said that consistency is not one of his big priorities. This doesn’t bother me in the least not does it detract from the power of the story. It seems it is only us fans who are determined to find some consistent universe. That’s a fun game at times but I think at a certain point, one might should recognize the un-resolvable nature of the inconsistency, especially where there is absolutely no existing text that would even suggest a resolution. Or then again, maybe not. Up to you. I apologize if I have offended anyone with my dogged (much better term than obsessive of fanatical) refusal to pretend to see what I just do not see.
