I always thought Angelius was more an anti-social personality disorder - with an obsession to dominate and humilate.

Angel does have vainity, sanctimousness and other faults - although the sanctimousness comes from an astute obversation in a "Five Seasons of Angel" essay book that Angel is so obsessed with being and being seen to be the best because of his fear he is the worse like Lancelot.
