Subject: X-Factor by Peter David similar to Angel?

About a year or more ago, Peter David (a very successful and Whedon like comic writer) returned to one of his best characters. Wanting to write a noir story with mutants, David turned to a character that he almost single-handedly made meaningful – Jaime Madrox, The Multiple Man.

The limited series flush with noir and well-balanced humor was a surprising success. The limited "Madrox" series spawned the new on-going X-Factor series, which follows the adventures of X-Factor Investigations (sound familiar?) as they take on the evil corporation Singularity Investigations (again, familiar?).

While you may say to yourself, “Hey! They’re ripping off my show,” this is not the case. David brings a special brand of writing to the table, and if any similarities are apparent then they can entirely be contributed to flattery.

A recent letter to the graphic novel said this:

“(Referring to the character of Layla Miller) – She reminds me of the files and records girl from ANGEL season 3. I know you said that this series would resemble the Angel TV series. Is this where you got her mannerisms from?”

David writes back,

“I don’t recall ever saying that. I know some fans have claimed there’s a resemblance. I can certainly see why they say that, vampires, demons, and a god, and the primary opponent was an evil law firm, whereas “X-Factor” ..Hmmm. ON second thought, no, I can’t see why they say that.”

David goes on to say that the character of Layla Miller is more like Nostradamus reincarnated in Wednesday Adams.

Either way, has anyone else checked out this book? What are your thoughts? Do you see a resemblance? Do you enjoy the book?

This is my favorite title right now and may be for a while. Obviously, it has my full endorsement.
