They typically are part of the contracts, but contracts often are actor-specific, especially for a lead. I suspect that some actors (and writers and directors and so on) enjoy doing these extras, and some do not. For others, it's just a matter of time-- if they have some free time, they do the extras, and if they don't, they don't.

For example, there was some criticism of SMG in the fan community that she didn't attend the show's (BtVS) wrap party. My understanding in this case was that she had already made a commitment to work in a feature film, and that she had to be on set or traveling to when the wrap party was held.

Whether this is true or not I'm in no position to say, but for sure showing up late on the first day of your new job doesn't send a good message to those in charge of the production or the other people you're going to be working with.
