I think that the muse is a fickle creature, whatever the medium. To think that all the best work is behind you would be paralyzing, I would imagine. I suppose that must be one of the real challenges successful child actors face.
I think SMG is a talented actor, but finding the right combination of talent, opportunity and craft is tough at the best of times. I wish her luck, she deserves it. I can't imagine Buffy with anyone else's face, and she made the character come alive.
I would never try to second guess anyone's choices, because I certainly don't know the circumstances involved.
