Subject: Angel's Return from the Hell Dimension

After re-watching season 3 recently, I noticed something that has been really bugging me.

If Angel supposedly spent centuries in a Hell dimension, what did he live on? He certainly wasn't a 'living skeleton' when he returned, and there didn't seem to be any permanent cerebral damage.

Also, why didn't his hair grow? It was the same length as when he left, and he didn't even have stubble. Is this a mistake, or is it an inidcation that Angel wasn't in the hell dimension for that long after all?
