Traditionally a novel or comic book is canon unless it directly contradicts the primary product. That is to say, everything that happens in a novel or comic book happens in the Buffyverse, unless the show said otherwise.

Don't ask me what is supposed to happen when comic and novel contradict each other, as far as I know there is no organized system.
