Although what happens to Dru in the Goddard comic story is pretty extreme, it still isn't as bad as what happened to Spike in S2, which he recovered completely from after a few months without magic. My personal theory is still that her visions were having a destructive effect on her similar to Cordelia's, although slower thanks to vampire resilience and magic tolerance.
