Subject: The Loss of the Straight Man

Giles. Yes his loss in Season 6 really put the show in some rough waters.

Giles was the grounded one, the straight man someone strong that could deflect the whims and banter of the rest and bring the show some of its solid foundation for which to springboard different emotions and ideas. He could make the craziest lingo or demon name seem real and tangible.

His loss along with the vanishing Xander were really the 2 reasons why I believe the show was pretty rocky the last 2 seasons. Along with Mr. Whedon's possible disengagement from the show. Don't get me wrong it was still my favorite show but I just really missed the first 5 seasons.

I really enjoyed these two characters. Both of which seemed to have much more air time in the first few seasons but maybe thats my imagination.

Also I rewatched season 2 recently and really was just enthused about the series again. I remembered all the things I loved about the show. SMG was really great especially with what the writers were giving her to work with - good stuff.
