Okay. He was beat up, and that temporarily damaged his olfactory sense. (All right! Everything's mystical, but we have to go by analogy a little with vampires!)
When she kissed him, he recognized her as the real deal. Maybe that was the super smell sense finally kicking in.
You know, when I think about it, it must have really been difficult for the writers to write fantasy consistently. It is so easy to forget a certain detail. Angel's not having the breath to give Buffy mouth-to-mouth came back to haunt the writers big time in regard to smoking and other activities.
And it is tough to express emotions without gasping or panting, so that, too, has caused some problems--but only for us Buffy fans that pay attention to every detail, including the physiology of vampire erections!
