If you're right about the snoring in Birthday, I don't think there's any excuse. Some people have made the point that reflex reactions could explain things like gasping in shock, but when a vampire is asleep, there's no reason s/he would be breathing, so s/he shouldn't be snoring.

As for why Spike couldn't smell the diff'ce. btwn. the real Buffy & the Buffybot, that's an easy wank. We know he stole some of Buffy's clothes; presumably he had the 'bot wear them, partly so it would smell like her. At the end of Intervention, though, it might have less to do w/any damage to Spike's olfactory sense than w/how he's processing the info--he was pretty out of it at that point. And like anyone, he was influenced by his own expectations of both Buffy & himself. He didn't think Buffy would come to him, so when she did, it couldn't have been her....
