The problem occurred way earlier than Season 3 of Angel. In the very first season of BtVS, in "Angel," Angel spends the night on the floor of Buffy's room. When she asks him if he snores, he says "I don't know. It's been a long time since anybody's been in a position to let me know." If he doesn't breathe, wouldn't he know the answer to that question and just say "no"?

And for that matter, according to the transcript on www.buffyworld.com, in the teaser for that episode, The Master takes a couple of deep breaths!
