Having Spike not notice a smell when he had other
things on his mind is not a continuity gaffe.

On the other hand, how well the human does in a
human vs. vampire fight seems determined by what
the writers want.

There are worse things.
Sometimes they show one thing happening,
but the characters act as if something else happened.
Buffy's fight with the robot in
Ted is one I've mentioned before.
