If one has to overlook the whole “smell” issue to get to this point, it was certainly worth the effort.

Playing Devil's Advocate, one could argue that this is 'cheating' from an authorial standpoint. Overlooking fundamental character aspects to shoehorn a story into a predetermined ending, instead of letting characters develop organically.

In some cases, an author can get away with doing this. But such instances add up, and over the course of a series, this can severely undermine suspension of disbelief. Too many shortcuts, and you have S7. Where the story goes where it goes, but largely fails to have the emotional impact it's supposed to. Emotion won't hold up if it's built upon too malleable a foundation.
