I agree with your argument completely. Spike prefaced his turning story to Buffy with "I've always been bad," which indicated to me that he told her some complete fabrication about what William was really like. He certainly would not have told Buffy anything at all about Cecelia, because that would give away the entire game - that he was a poetry-spouting ninny. He probably gave her some line about him being a cockney tough - a characterization consistent with his affected lower-class accent.

I think Buffy's saying "you're beneath me" was just one of those blissfully dramatic moments from a beautifully written script. Buffy was completely unknowing of the parallels to William's previous experience. In fact, her unknowingness is quite important - it underscores that Spike is still William underneath all the black leather. If she had known the implications of what she was saying, it would have been merely pettiness on her part, not something truly meaningful.
