Personally, I had never bemoaned the loss of Giles in S6. Buffy had to grow up sometime. She couldn't depend upon him for the rest of her life as a Slayer. And considering that the First Slayer had managed to be on her own, I never saw the point in having a Watcher, beyond the initial training. Perhaps there is a reason why the First Slayer had successfully managed to utilize all aspects of herself - Spirit, Heart, Head and Hands - because she did not have a Watcher hampering her at all times. People saw the Scoobies' method of defeating Adam as a reason why Buffy and any other Slayer always needed a Watcher and friends around her. I saw it as an example of Buffy's FAILURE to utilize all aspects of herself and her role as a Slayer. This failure turned into a success in Season 7, when she had managed to grab the Scythe.

Don't get me wrong. There are times when we need to connect with others or might need their help. But there are times when you don't. And in the end, you only have youself, as Buffy told Angel in "Becoming, Part 2".
