Do you think Angel really believed in the Shanshu prophecy? Initially, he certainly seemed to believe. However, in Epiphany, his oft quoted “There’s no grand plan, no big win… If there’s no great, glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. Cause that’s all there is” does not sound like someone who believes in some prophetical destiny. Of course, characters in the Buffyverse are known to mislead the viewers but Angel really did change after this episode and seemed to believe what he said and, more importantly, act on that belief. I do not recall the Shanshu being a big issue again until season 5 when the second ensouled vampire becomes corporeal (I might be mistaken on this however). Even when Spike showed up, Angel expressed the belief that the Shanshu was bs. However, he was certainly upset when Spike bested him in Destiny and he seemed to lose his sense of self in Soul Purpose but he could have been more upset that maybe he wasn’t the champion more than a loss of the Shanshu (how much of his angst in Soul Purpose was due to Angel’s real feelings and how much was due to the Selminth parasite is unclear to me). If he didn’t believe in the Shanshu, then signing it away would hardly be a noteworthy action. I get the impression that Angel was fairly skeptical of almost all prophecies but that might be my own filer at work as I vigorously reject the whole idea of destiny (in line with my extreme atheism). As you said, there is no definitive answer and am I ever glad that that is so. I might be mistaken but I don’t believe there is a site “All Things Philosophical in Beverly Hills, 90210”.
