Well I completely agree with you. I think the quote you refer to was, philosophically speaking, the best Gunn line in the entire series. As he conveyed his thoughts on the matter to Fred, I was thinking: “You tell it Charles”. But of course, I don’t believe in prophecies or destinies or any kind of teleological view of existence. The Angel quote from Epiphany was one of my two favorite Buffyverse quotes (the other being what Buffy said to Dawn in The Gift “The hardest thing in this world is to live in it”). What about people who do believe in such things? I am in no position to evaluate their course of action, as I do not understand how to integrate free will with a belief in some sort of predestination. If I believe that my destiny required some specific action, wouldn’t I be a fool to act otherwise, even if my intellect told me do something entirely different? Or does my intellect even enter into the decision making process in this case? The whole idea of a destiny really confuses me.
