I certainly see the excellence of skill and innovation that you admire. I feel that way in the field of music. I have a specific set of criteria that for me makes a great composer, and a lot of it has to do with innovation.

I guess I don't think the South ever had a chance to win. Whether their generals made good decisions or bad decisions, I don't see how they ever had a chance. The Germans in world war two, by contrast, had a chance to win. They made poor decisions that compromised their ability to achieve victory in addition to being up against opponents whose resources and capabilities were strong. I guess I feel that Lincoln, Grant and Sherman recognized the reality, that the south could not win and could not be allowed to. Mybe that's not generalship exactly, but Grant and Sherman prosecuted the war in accordance with the reality of the situation. Lee was in fantasy land.
